Focus on lung health at Second Saturday Qigong

Our Second Saturday Qigong Series is next up on November 11 at 10:30am. This is open to the community—membership at the South Boston YMCA is not required.

Each Saturday class includes a basic introduction to Qigong for any new students plus a special focus. The emphasis of this class will be lung health with the fall season being the time to focus on lungs according to Traditional Chinese Medicine.

With Qigong being all about breath energy, it might seem redundant to focus on the lungs. But as one of the five major organs, a special emphasis is needed, especially during the dry fall weather when we begin to develop respiratory illnesses.

On Saturday we will be using lung-focused movements and visualizations from many Qigong systems include Primordial, The Eight Brocades, The Five Animal Frolics, Five Element Palm, and The Healing Sounds.

What are the Healing Sounds about? Using awareness and gentle movements plus a sound said to be associated with a particular organ. Modern medicine uses vibrational energy as a way of both diagnosing illnesses and healing. I see that as confirming part of how the Healing Sounds seek to work.

We will end the class with a guided meditation which focuses on the breath—Embryonic Breathing. It is one of the more relaxing meditations we do as it seeks to help us breathe not just deeply but as calmly and gently as a small child. You can participate in the closing meditation in whatever way makes you feel comfortable—seated in a chair, seated on the floor, or lying down. For Embryonic Breathing, most students who are able prefer to lie down. Falling asleep, especially during this mediation, is OK. It is a good thing to relax!

The class is one hour. Come join us Saturday in the Mind/Body Room at 650 Hamilton Blvd in South Boston, Virginia!
